Description

“Maternal Instinct” is a series of artworks that challenges one of the most deeply rooted narratives: the idea that maternal instinct is natural, immediate, and universal. Through this body of work, Stella Polare proposes a more nuanced perspective—one in which motherhood is revealed as a complex construction shaped by cultural expectations, social roles, and lived experience.

Each piece in the series is created using torn paper, layered, displaced, and reassembled. This deliberate fragmentation becomes both a visual language and a conceptual gesture. The maternal figure does not appear as a fixed image, but as something in constant transformation—built through tension, absence, and reconfiguration.

You see textures and fragments.
The artist reveals a process of becoming.

On a biological level, the works evoke a body that nourishes, gives, and transforms—sometimes to the point of dissolution.
On a social level, they reflect the silent structures that shape motherhood: expectations of sacrifice, resilience, and unconditional presence.

The act of tearing is central to the series. It is not an act of destruction, but of expression. Each rupture speaks of giving, erosion, and the negotiation between self and role. The surfaces carry traces of this dialogue—between construction and disappearance, strength and vulnerability.

Across the series, motherhood is neither idealized nor rejected. Instead, it is approached as a shifting territory, marked by contradictions: love and loss of self, presence and fragmentation, power and exhaustion.

Each artwork becomes a fragment of a larger narrative—a constellation of states that together form a deeper, more honest portrait of the maternal experience.
